Someone who is knowledgeable about the past will never despair about the present.
There they were warmly received by the head of the Southern Molucca region, Yohannis Manuhutu, and the commander of the local units of the KNIA, Major Nanlohu.
The Ambonians were considered fierce fighters, reliable soldiers, absolutely loyal to the Dutch crown. They were compared to the Gurkhas, and on other islands of the Dutch East Indies they were nicknamed "Belanda Hitam" (Black Dutch).
On April 25, 1950, the independence of the South Moluccan Republic (Republic of Maluku Selatan - RMS) was proclaimed in Ambon.
Jakarta sent Ambon Minister of Health, Dr. Johannes Leimen, to Ambon, promising broad autonomy for the region. But the leaders of the PMC agreed only to independence. The negotiations ended in nothing.
In June, the Indonesian fleet established a blockade of the rebellious islands. The South Moluccan Field Force headed east under the command of Colonel Kavilarang.
On July 13, the first 4 battalions landed in Labuan, on the eastern tip of Buru Island, in the first two days of fighting with the "red berets" 61 Indonesians were killed, the largest losses were suffered by Major Pelupessi's Pattimura battalion, staffed by Ambonians. In August, two more battalions were landed on Seram, by the end of September, the federals managed to take control of the settlements on Seram and Buru.
But the resistance continued, most of the PMC soldiers fled into the jungle of the large and sparsely populated island of Seram, where they continued the guerrilla war.
On January 9, 1952, about 2,000 PMC fighters, led by Manuhutu, surrendered to the feds in the village of Amanam on the southern bank of the Seram. Manukhuta and 11 other prominent PMCs received between 3 and 8 years, but in 1955 they were pardoned. Several hundred PMC fighters, led by Manusama, were able to reach the Dutch-controlled western part of New Guinea, from where they were sent to Holland.
But Sumokil, with a small group of supporters, continued his war on Seram. On December 2, 1963, near the village of Wahai on the northern bank of the Seram, he was captured by soldiers of the 320th battalion of the Silivangi division.
The war ended, Sumokil was brought to trial. On it, he continued to defend the independence of the PMC, speaking in principle only in Dutch (although he knew Indonesian very well). In April 1964, he was sentenced to death.
The verdict was carried out on April 12, 1966, on the personal order of General Suharto, who actually became president.
The PMC symbols are officially banned in Indonesia and there are occasional incidents of raising the PMC flag in public places - as in 20007 during President Yudono's visit to Ambon.
The fallen 23-year-old Slamet Riyadi, the son of a KNIA officer and a Catholic from Central Java, became a national hero of Indonesia, there is a street named after him in any Indonesian city.

I just sold thirty million. We bet none of you have thirty million?
One of the most interesting places in Southeast Asia from the point of view of history is located in the unknown backyards of Indonesia.
Since ancient times, Europe and Asia have known each other. Alexander the Great reached the borders of India, the Romans contacted the Persians who knew about China. A thousand years ago, silk and porcelain from China was delivered to Europe along the "Silk Road" through Central Asia. Another important commodity that could not be obtained in Europe was spices. Nowadays, any store sells 100 types of Galina Blanca seasoning, and in the Middle Ages even ordinary salt was a strategic resource, and some more sophisticated spices were the food of kings. They were delivered from India, where, in turn, they were brought from Indonesia.
When the Byzantine Empire fell in 1453 and the traditional supply route through the Middle East was closed by an unfriendly Turkey, this motivated people in the very west of Europe to seek alternative routes. So the Portuguese reached India by sea around Africa, the Spaniards discovered America, Magellan traveled around the world, and in the end the Europeans reached the small island of Ternate - the only place in the world at that time where cloves and nutmeg grew. Well, not quite the only one - there is also the neighboring island of Tidore, to which you can sail only 20 kilometers. These two islands have competed for centuries for control over vast territories around from Sulawesi to Papua.
The first Europeans on Ternate were the Portuguese. At first, the rulers of Ternate considered an alliance with foreigners beneficial in the fight against Tidore, but gradually the Portuguese began to behave more impudently, tried to preach Christianity, overthrew the sultans, as a result, in 1575, an uprising occurred, and the Portuguese were expelled. After that, the Spaniards and the Dutch fought for the island. The Spanish initially based on the island of Tidore and later captured the former Portuguese fort in the south of the island. The Dutch built their fort where the center of the island's capital is now. At the end of the end, the Spaniards left for the Philippines (where they even founded the city of Ternate in honor of the former possession), the sultanate of Ternate was relatively independent until the Dutch colonization in the 19th century, and formally the clan of sultans still exists today, as in many other regions of Indonesia, although not has official authority.
The decline of Ternate in the 18-19th centuries is due to the fact that cloves and nutmeg were learned to grow in other tropical places, as a result, spices ceased to be such a rare and valuable product.
The Moluccas are now a very remote region of Indonesia, but Ternate is quite civilized, better than the Lesser Sundaes. In the center of the capital (also called Ternate) there are several malls, even KFC got here. Two out of three mobile operators operate in Ternate (Telkomsel and Indosat).
They love football here.
Especially German for some reason.
Graffiti all over the city.
Many churches are the legacy of the colonial past.
The population of Ternate is Muslim, although in general there are quite a few Christians in the Moluccas. In 1999-2002, against the background of the revolution and crisis in the country, there was chaos and mutual massacre of Muslims and Christians in this region, but Ternate hardly touched. Then the northern part of the Moluccas was allocated into a separate province (earlier the capital was on the island of Ambon). So that Ternate and Tidore would not be offended, the capital of the region was founded from scratch on the neighboring island of Halmahera. There he is on the horizon.
The Dutch fort stands well-restored in the city center.
Ternate was the capital of the Dutch East India Company before it moved to Jakarta.
You can walk along the walls.
There are still dwelling houses inside the fort.
The small Portuguese castle is well preserved on the northern outskirts of the city.
This place is called the Tolucco fortress.
From here there is an excellent view of the city and the Gamalam volcano, which occupies the entire center of the island.
On the horizon is the same volcanic island of Tidore - Ternate's eternal rival.
By the way, this type is depicted on the 1000 rupee banknote.
The summit is often covered by clouds.
There is no beach in Ternate, but you can dive right from the promenade. The water is surprisingly clean, although it would seem that the port is nearby. Pay attention to how many people are bathing.
But it started to rain, and how many people began to swim now?
Ternate fish market. A kilogram of almost any fish costs Rs 25,000 ($ 2).
Ternate has special speed bumps made of ropes.
And in local minibuses you can watch the show "Ukraine May Talent".
