Ⓘ Buruan

Buruan is an Austronesian language used by the Buruans, the main indigenous people of the Indonesian island of Buru. It is preserved among the part of the Buruans compactly living outside Buru, in particular, on Ambon Island, some other islands of the Indonesian province of Maluku, in the country's capital Jakarta, and also in the Netherlands. The total number of speakers is about 35 thousand people, of which more than 30 thousand are in Buru.

Belongs to the Buruan group of the Central Moluccan branch of the Central Malay-Polynesian languages. Within the framework of the language, three dialects are distinguished, the speakers of which are the ethnic groups of the same name of Buruans: the wound of more than 14 thousand speakers, the Masarete of more than 9.5 thousand speakers and the vaesama of more than 6.5 thousand speakers. In addition, according to various estimates, 3-5 thousand people, along with their main dialect, use the so-called "secret language" of Ligahan. The Fogi dialect, which existed earlier in the west of the island, is now considered extinct, while the corresponding ethnic group still exists.

The linguistic difference between the Buruan dialects is quite small. Thus, the lexical commonality between Masarete and Vaesama is about 90%, between Masarete and Rana - 88%, between Vaesama and Rana - 80%.

The closeness of Buruan with other languages of his group can be traced very clearly, especially in the case of the Mazarete dialect. Thus, the latter has 68% of the lexical commonality with the Lisela language, 45% with the Kaeli language and 44% with the Ambelau language.

Despite the fact that the official language of Indonesia, Indonesian, is becoming more widespread among Buruans, it practically does not supplant Buruansky in everyday life. Only a relative minority of speakers departed from the use of their native language - in particular, the Fogi ethnic group, as well as some coastal communities that are switching to the Ambonian dialect of the Malay language, the so-called Melayu Ambon Indon. Melayu Ambon - widely spoken as a lingua franca in the Maluku Islands, is actually a simplified Indonesian language with some local lexicon.

Unlike other indigenous languages of the Buru, such as the Lisela and Kaeli, the Buruan language has a script - the Latin alphabet - which is actually used by its native speakers. So, in particular, Buruans-Christians use Bible fragments in their native language during divine services, the first translations of which were made by Dutch missionaries back in 1904.

The most significant studies of the Buruan language were carried out in the 1980s by Charles Eng. Charles E. Grimes and Barbara Eng. Barbara Dix Grimes Grimes - Australian missionaries and ethnographers, active members of SIL International, not to be confused with Joseph Eng. Joseph E. Grimes and Barbara Eng. Barbara F. Grimes by the Grimes, parents of Charles, also famous Australian ethnographers).
